Gabapentin and Pregabalin

Uses

Gabapentin and pregabalin are used to treat discomfort arising from nerves (e.g. pain, burning, stinging, \pins and needles\") associated with a number of dermatologic conditions. In high doses it is utilized in the management of siezure disorders. Originally used in the treatment of residual nerve pain following an outbreak of herpes zoster (\"shingles\") or pain that occurs in arms, hands, fingers, legs, feet or toes if you have diabetes. They may also be used to treat fibromyalgia seizures in some persons with epilepsy and itching associated with dialysis.

Gabapentin (brand name Neurontin)and Pregabalin (brand name Lyrica) were originally designed to treat fibromyalgia seizures and anxiety disorders. However they are also prescribed to relieve pain -- the burning stabbing pain or aches that may last for months or years -- associated with an attack of shingles (herpes zoster). Pregabalin was designed as a successor to Gabapentin; it is more potent absorbs faster and has greater bioavailability.

Dosage

Pregabalin is taken by mouth two or three times a day and should be taken at the same time each day. Your doctor may start you on a lower dosage and work the dosage up after the first week. Pregabalin is habit forming; do not take for a longer period than prescribed. Likewise Gabapentin is taken by mouth twice a day and should be taken with a full glass of water. If you stop taking Gabapentin or Pregabalin you may experience withdrawal symptoms which might include trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, nausea, diarrhea, headaches, anxiety or seizures. If you're taking it for anxiety do not discontinue if you experience mood changes.

Side Effects

Dizziness and drowsiness are very common in patients prescribed Gabapentin and Pregabalin. Also common is lethargy, mood swings, hostility, concentration problems, hyperactivity, headaches, weight gain, confusion, bloating, gas, constipation, nausea, red itchy eyes, and unwanted eye movements, among other side effects. Rare but more serious affects may include blurred vision, double vision, or other changes in eyesight;hives;rash;itching;blisters;swelling of the eyes face, throat, mouth, lips, gums, tongue, head or neck;shortness of breath;wheezing;muscle pain; tenderness; soreness or weakness especially if it comes along with fever;chest pain. If you experience one of the more serious side effects notify your doctor immediately.

Notes of Precaution

Gabapentin and Pregabalin will cause drowsiness; do not operate heavy�machinery�until you know how the medications affect you. Do not drink alcohol as it will exacerbate the drowsiness.

Gabapentin and Pregabalin are habit forming. Take only as prescribed.

Gabapentin and Pregabalin may cause an unexpected change in your mental health.including in rare casues suicidal thoughts. Notify your doctor if you experience panic attacks; agitation or restlessness; new or worsening irritability; anxiety or depression; difficulty falling or staying asleep; aggressive; angry or violent behavior; or suicidal thoughts.
