Herpangia is a viral illness that involves sores inside the mouth, as well as a sore throat and fever. It’s most common during the summer and fall months. The illness is fairly mild, though it can cause more dangerous complications in infants. The illness generally lasts only a week.

Diagnosis
A physical examination and a history is usually sufficient to diagnose Herpangina. Tests are usually unnecessary. Symptoms may include fever, headache, sore throat, Sores in the mouth and throat, as well as similar sores on the feet, hands, and buttocks.

Treatment
Treatment is limited to acetaminophen or Ibuprofen to treat the fever and the discomfort of the mouth sores. You should drink more fluids, especially cold milk products. You can also use topical anesthetics that have benzocaine or xylocaine to treat the sores. Proper hand-washing may prevent the disease, since it is transmitted through contact with contaminated feces.
