Mr. Clean, Jason Stathom, The Rock and Jeff Ross. These are all men gifted with a particular hairline. I have been blessed with this same follicular talent: male pattern baldness. I have tried to convince my wife I look more like Hobbs, Shaw or even Mr. Clean, but she still insists I look more like Mr. Ross. Thanks honey!

Male pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia) is a very common problem. It occurs in almost all men at some point in their lives. It is more prominent in certain populations and is mostly due to genetics. This genetic tendency causes an excessive response to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This response leads to shortening of the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle. It also results in shrinkage of the hair follicle. Up to 80% of men can suffer some variant of pattern hair loss by the age of 70. The men in the above photo are not 70. So, what can be done to help this condition when it occurs at an earlier onset?

Over-the-Counter Options:

○      Minoxidil is a prescription pill used to treat high blood pressure. One of the side effects of minoxidil in pill form is excessive hair growth (hypertrichosis). The topical form is used to treat male pattern hair loss. You have probably heard of the topical form of minoxidil. Its trade name is Rogaine and comes in 2% and 5% strengths. It is available over-the-counter and comes in solution or foam.

○      Biotin is a B vitamin that strengthens hair and nails. It is an over-the-counter dietary supplement and can be purchased by itself or in a complex with other vitamins that help facilitate its effects on the skin. Our aesthetics department carries an advanced hair strengthening supplement that contains shark cartilage. Shark cartilage consists of proteins and glycosaminoglycans of marine origin that promote hair growth and thickening.

 Prescription Treatments:

○      Finasteride is a prescription medicine for male pattern baldness. It is prescribed as a 1mg tablet to be taken once a day. It has been shown to stop hair loss in up to 90% of men for at least 5 years.

 In-Office Treatments:

○      Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a treatment administered here at Ozark Dermatology Clinic by our talented aesthetics team. PRP therapy uses injections of a patient’s own platelets to generate hair growth.
